A wave of Israeli military attacks throughout the Gaza Strip has killed 58 Palestinians at the time of reporting, with more casualties potentially underway.
One attack includes a bombing of a tent camp in the al-Mawasi area, a so-called humanitarian “safe zone” in the south of Gaza, on Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning, killing eleven people, including children.
Drone strikes also targeted the area in the afternoon, killing one person and injuring dozens, with the wounded being transported to Nazzer Hospital for treatment.
The North of Gaza has also experienced air raids in the past 24 hours, with three people confirmed dead in the Shujayea neighbourhood so far. Locals are now attempting to flee the target zone and seek refuge elsewhere.
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees, UNRWA, has spoken out on X to condemn the conflict.
“One child gets killed every hour. These are not numbers. These are lives cut short,” he wrote.
“Killing children cannot be justified.”
The latest barrage of attacks comes just hours after reports of a Gaza ceasefire deal arriving in a matter of days, with renewed pressure from mediators Egypt, Qatar and the USA to end the fighting and release hostages from both sides.
The deal would involve the exchange of 20 Palestinian soldiers for every female soldier released in the first three stages of the proposed agreement. It would also include the phased release of Israeli hostages; of the 96 being held in Gaza, 62 are assumed still alive by Israel.
As of early December, the violence in Gaza has taken the lives of at least 42,502 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis since 7 October 2023. Of those injured are at least 105,454 Palestinians and 5,431 Israelis.
