A few days after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War, his administration has carried out a similar rebranding within the White House.

The Defence Directorate, a key arm of the National Security Council, has been retitled the Directorate of War, according to a U.S. official and another source familiar with the move. Staff in the office are now referred to as directors for war, overseen by a special assistant to the president for war, the sources said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has also been serving as national security adviser since May, approved the change this week, one source added. A White House official confirmed the new name and punctuated the announcement with “#WAR!”

It remains uncertain whether the rebrand will affect policy. Trump’s adoption of the term “war” over “defence” highlights an irony in his presidency, as he continues to present himself as a peacemaker while allies press for his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Critics of the Pentagon’s name change last week argued it would entail expensive updates to signage and official stationery worldwide. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth insisted the change was “not just about words — it’s about the warrior ethos.”

Each NSC directorate oversees specific areas, from legislative affairs and intelligence to regional matters such as Europe or East Asia. The Defence — now War — Directorate has traditionally led on military preparedness and weapons policy, though responsibilities vary between administrations.

While the War Directorate remains one of the NSC’s most prominent units, the council’s overall influence has waned under Trump, with staff numbers falling sharply and authority shifting to the Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence agencies.
