Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were confirmed dead in a helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, Ghana’s Chief of Staff Julius Debrah announced.

"The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country. All flags are to fly at half mast until further notice," Debrah said.

The Ghana Armed Forces reported that the Z-9 military helicopter, operated by the Air Force, had departed from Accra in the morning en route to Obuasi, a gold-mining town in the Ashanti Region. The aircraft lost contact with radar shortly after takeoff.

Rescue teams were dispatched to locate the wreckage, which was found hours later in a remote forested area. All passengers aboard were declared dead at the scene.

The identities of the other six victims have not been publicly released.

The Harbin Z-9 is a Chinese-built utility helicopter used by the Ghana Air Force for troop transport and surveillance. Military and government officials have used the aircraft for internal deployments in recent years.

Ghana has declared a national period of mourning. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with aviation and military authorities examining weather conditions and mechanical failure as possible factors.
