Under the proposal, the U.S. Treasury Department would grant a temporary one-month waiver permitting Iraqi Airways to operate flights to and from the holy city of Najaf, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Shi'ite Muslims.

UK questions five men held near RAF Fairford

Reuters

British counterterrorism police are questioning five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences. The arrests followed a tip-off that three large white vans were heading towards the airbase, which has been used by U.S. bombers in strikes on Iranian targets.

A source familiar with the investigation said an Iran-linked motive was considered the most likely line of inquiry, while possible Russian sabotage and an Islamist plot were also being examined. Police have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or confirmed a motive.

Security has been tightened around RAF Fairford and other U.S.-linked facilities in Britain, while a 400-metre cordon was imposed and residents from 85 homes were evacuated. Iran has repeatedly denied involvement in alleged attacks or plots in Britain and elsewhere. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
