Tehran’s charm offensive against Washington – on U.S. soil

Iran’s top leaders are using the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York to push Tehran’s position on key regional and international disputes, holding a series of high-level meetings, engaging with U.S. media and think-tanks, and using social media platforms.

They have taken the annual event at the world body as an opportunity to strike back at the United States on its soil -- not by hard power military means -- rather, by employing America’s soft power tools to express Tehran’s views on major issues including the Iran-U.S. conflict.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who are participating at this year’s General Assembly, have kept a busy schedule of meeting their counterparts on the sidelines of its proceedings.

In the latest initiative, President Pezeshkian led his charm offensive to the most ardent news media of U.S. President Donald Trump and took part in an exclusive interview with FOX News on Thursday.

In the interview, Iran’s President blamed the U.S. for the conflict in the Middle East and ruled out any military aspect with regard to Tehran’s nuclear programme under UN safeguards.

He also criticised Washington for the subsequent breakdowns in diplomacy, stating that Tehran remains prepared to reach an agreement to end the conflict.

Besides his key lecture on the second day of the assembly, and meeting prime ministers of Pakistan, Lebanon, and the Netherland, President Pezeshkian held a joint meeting with the American chief editors, senior reporters and think-tank elites, state IRNA news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Araghchi, who is heading a diplomatic team at the UN headquarters, continued sideline meetings with his counterparts including from Russia, UK, Jordan and Ukraine.

The meeting with the Ukrainian foreign minister was particularly significant in terms of Kiev’s fatal attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea in July.

Also, the meeting with Jordan’s top diplomat was important in that Iran repeatedly targeted U.S. military bases on the Arab country’s soil with barrage of retaliatory ballistic missiles.

Earlier this week, Araghchi met the EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas and a number of European counterparts, in which he reportedly criticised Europe for its stand on the Israeli-U.S. war against Iran as well as against Tehran’s civilian nuclear programme.

His deputy for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, who is accompanying Araghchi, has warned that Europe’s participation in the U.S. airstrikes against Iran would not go unanswered.

He made the statement in a post on X on Thursday following NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s acknowledgment that around 5,000 flights had been conducted from European bases in support of the US operation against Iran.
