The United Arab Emirates suspended all trade and financial transactions with Iran on Tuesday after saying Iranian missiles had targeted maritime navigation in the Gulf.
On 18 August, Abu Dhabi said its air defences detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran towards the UAE.
“UAE air defenses detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran toward the country, with the first falling outside the country’s territorial waters, while the second fell within the territorial waters,” the UAE Ministry of Defence said in a statement posted on social media.
In a second statement issued later, the ministry said assessments indicated both missiles had targeted maritime navigation before falling into the sea.
The initial statement came nearly two hours after authorities sent residents a phone alert warning of a “potential missile threat”.
It was the first such warning since a false alarm in June and another alert in July over an attack that ultimately did not enter UAE territory. Before those incidents, the last missile warning had been issued in early May.
Meanwhile, tankers belonging to the UAE’s state-owned oil company, ADNOC, have reportedly been targeted repeatedly in recent weeks.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei rejected the UAE’s claim that Iran had launched a missile towards the country.
