Iran planned to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump, according to intelligence shared with Washington by Israel, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The revelations would mark an escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Iran has repeatedly vowed retaliation against the U.S. for killing Qassem Soleimani, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) elite Quds Force in 2020.
Ali Shamkhani, ex-Secretary of Iran’s highest decision making body, the National Security Council, previously warned officials had discussed “13 revenge scenarios,” adding that the weakest option could become a “historic nightmare,” for the Americans.
Shamkhani was killed in an Israeli strike on Tehran in February 2026, along with six other Iranian military leaders.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington reportedly declined to comment on the allegations of an alleged plot. Iran’s Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The White House referred the WSJ to comments Trump made Wednesday at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye, where the U.S. President warned Tehran wanted him dead.
“They want to take out the U.S. leader—me,” he said. “I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long,” Trump said.
