The Islamic Revolution’s Guards Corps of Iran (IRGC) said it carried out a retaliatory attack on a U.S. airbase in the early hours of Thursday. The airbase was used to target a ground control station on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas Airport in Hormuzgan Province, which faces the Strait of Hormuz.

“Following the dawn attack by the U.S. aggressor army on a point on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas Airport with aerial projectiles, the U.S. air base from which the aggression originated was targeted at 4:50 am (local time).”

In a statement, the IRGC warned that any repeat aggression would draw a firmer response.

“This response is a serious warning so that the enemy knows that aggression will not go unanswered and if it is repeated, our response will be more decisive,” read the statement.

“Responsibility for the consequences lies with the aggressor,” the DefaNews website, which covers military news, quoted the IRGC as saying.

Thursday’s (28 May) encounter between Iran and the U.S. was the second in recent days following an attack on IRGC’s Navy earlier this week, which Iran said it responded to by downing an advanced U.S. military drone.

While the stalled peace process is inching forward through mediation efforts by regional countries, local Iranian news media, quoting the state-owned broadcaster IRIB, released the unofficial highlights of an interim peace deal with the United States on Wednesday.

The draft includes the framework of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) based on Iran’s 14-point proposal to end the war, signalling a potential roadmap towards easing long-standing regional tensions.

Although both Iran and the U.S. have been refraining from any major concessions, the released draft says the U.S. has committed to lifting the naval blockade of Iran’s southern ports in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

According to IRIB's report, the U.S. has also committed to withdrawing its military forces from Iran's perimetre, one of the most serious points of contention between Tehran and Washington.

It adds that in the event that a final agreement is reached within a 60-day moratorium, it will be ratified by a binding UN Security Council resolution.

The reported draft has no reference to the nuclear dispute, as Iran has stressed that its civilian nuclear programme is not on the agenda of indirect talks with the U.S. at this time.
