Skype, the well-known internet messaging and calling service owned by Microsoft, has officially announced its shutdown, set for May 2025.

The company made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) this past Friday, signaling the conclusion of an era for the platform, which first launched in 2003 and became a widely used tool for both personal and business communication.

"Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available," the official statement declared.

"Over the coming days, you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype."

According to the statement, Microsoft Teams will offer users the same essential features they are accustomed to on Skype, including one-on-one calls, group conversations, messaging, and file sharing.
