OpenAI has introduced Deep Research, a new feature for ChatGPT that autonomously gathers and analyzes information from hundreds of online sources, aiming to function at the level of a research analyst.
Unlike traditional AI responses, Deep Research offers a transparent summary of its process, with citations displayed in a sidebar. Users can submit queries with text, images, PDFs, or spreadsheets, and the tool generates detailed responses within 5 to 30 minutes, including bullet points, tables, and—soon—embedded images and charts.
While Deep Research promises in-depth analysis, OpenAI acknowledges it may occasionally "hallucinate" or misidentify credible information.
The feature, optimized for Pro users, allows up to 100 queries per month for a $200 monthly fee, with limited access available for Plus, Team, and Enterprise users. OpenAI cited the tool's intensive computational demands as a reason for current usage limits.
OpenAI reports that the model powering Deep Research scored 26.6% accuracy on the "Humanity’s Last Exam" benchmark, outperforming GPT-4o’s 3.3% and other models in its class.
